Frome Town 0-1 Chippenham town

Frome fell to their second one-nil defeat as the Bluebirds entertained, two weeks before the 2025/26 season campaign begins for the Robins.

It’s been four months since Badgers Hill has hosted a fixture, with all the volunteers working hard to make sure the stadium is in good shape for the first game of this season.

The first noticeable part of this fixture was an injury concern: Baker was trying to close down his man, but fell to the ground after some discomfort with his left leg. He was forced to leave the pitch in the sixth minute to make sure there was no excess strain on his leg.

One of the first attacking threats came from Holliday. The ex-Manor Farm winger took aim from the left but failed to trouble the keeper.

An opportunity arose for the Bluebirds' No.9 to be put through on goal, but a great stop by Phillips kept the scoreline level. Just a minute later they’re put through again. This time the No.11 rolled past Phillips but had to lay it to the midfielder and scuffle his effort.

Hopkins had a chance to break the deadlock in the 28th minute. The No.11 had the ball with his back facing the goal. He spun and shot without looking; the visitors' keeper made a certain goalscoring save.

The first booking was given to our skipper. He slid too late into a former robin, Ethan Vaughan.

On the stroke of half-time, Holliday intercepted the ball and was awarded a Frome corner: the set-piece from Hopkins found Maidment, whose header hit the crossbar.

Just the one change in the break for the hosts. Sam Heal replaced the only trialist for Frome that afternoon.

The first chance of the second half came from a cross from Ferris. The Bluebirds' defender tried to clear it away but was close to scoring in his own net.

A close call for the visitors' goalkeeper as he messed up his lines from 40 yards out, giving Zak Drew an opportunity to shoot from range. His effort was just too high.

After this attack, the visitors showed their class for the remainder 30 minutes of play, showing that they were two levels above the hosts.

Their first chance of the spell came from the left flank. The No.9 was given a chance to take aim from outside the box. The forward struck the ball too hard over the stands and off of the ground.

Just a minute later, Chippenham took the lead. The No.17 took aim from the left flank and the ball went below Phillips’ legs.

Frome’s response came straight from the restart. Drew was played through on goal, his effort was just a fingertip away from the back of the net, a fine stop from the goalkeeper.

Something to cheer about for the hosts, as Sam Meakes returned to the Badgers Hill playing surface. He played the final 10 minutes of play. He had one chance straight away as Holliday gave the No.9 a golden opportunity to tie the contest, but the effort was just wide of the post.

Chippenham were able to hold out their victory away from home. In contrast, there were more minutes in the tank for the Frome players. Kyle Phillips had his first 90 minutes in between the sticks since last season.

Yate is the next and final pre-season fixture, as we travel up to Gloucestershire once again.

As we approach the start of our league and cup campaigns for the coming season, I would like to say a big thank-you in advance to some of the people who have been working hard behind the scenes at Badgers Hill. Our new stadium manager, Alex Silk, along with others, has been putting in the hours to make sure that the stadium is fit for purpose. I popped into the ground awhile ago to see how things were shaping up. The only person I came across was Alex, who was making some repairs to the home changing rooms. The pitch looked parched, with only two small sprinklers working against the odds to bring the grass back to life. It…
