Frome Town vs. Nailsea & Tickenham: Somerset Premier Cup Preview and Ticket Info

Steve Jupp, BA11's Club Historian, reports on our first county cup fixture of the campaign!

It may only be the Somerset Premier Cup but Wednesday’s first-ever meeting with Western League Nailsea & Tickenham holds plenty of significance for the Badgers Hill faithful.

The county competition for clubs at Step Six and above was actually renamed the ‘Francis Hillier Premier Cup’ in the close season, in memory of the former long-serving Somerset FA president.

And on the subject of long-serving, Wednesday’s tie brings up the impressive milestone of Danny Greaves’ 300th match as Frome Town manager as he joins an exclusive club which only has two other members, namely Doug Hayward (1959-67) and Derek Brain (1970-78).

No doubt he will give welcome playing minutes to those who have been on the fringe of the action so far and the incentive to win will not only be progress to the next round but also a significant place in club history.

In 121 years, no Frome Town team has ever begun a season with SEVEN straight wins so if all goes well, we could be witnessing something quite unique.

Hoping to spoil the party, Nailsea & Tickenham, a club formed as recently as 2015 following a merger between Nailsea Town and Tickenham United, will be looking to chalk-up their first victory of the campaign.

Somerset County League champions as recently as 2022, they achieved back-to-back promotions with elevation to the Western League Premier where in the last couple of years, they have registered finishes of ninth and seventh last term.

2025-26 has not begun well for the Swags, however, with only a single point from seven league encounters along with early exits from both FA Cup and Vase.

Last season, the Robins saw off Brislington, Bath City, Mendip Broadwalk and Paulton Rovers in making it all the way to the FINAL where they succumbed by the only goal to a Weston-super-Mare side which included Theo Lynden.

This cup may not be a priority but it’s important to keep hard-worked-for momentum going and it’s always nice to create a little piece of history.

Squad Update

With such a small squad, and a handful of injuries, it will be a strong squad on Wednesday night as the Robins look to continue our good start to the season.

Mike Baker (calf strain) and Harris Feltham (fractured metatarsals) remain sidelined for a further 10-14 days all being well. Kynan Murchison is awaiting results of a scan to determine whether he has had any setback in his recovery from a knee issue stemming back from last season's Somerset Premier Cup win at Bath.

On a positive note, we are looking forward to giving Charlie Holliday a first start of the season, and a home debut following a few bench appearances after his return from injury.

The fans will also likely see a couple of our loan players feature as Emmanuel Athanasiou and Jensen Wakefield are included in the matchday squad following great starts to their seasons at Oldland and Bradford.
