Frome Town vs. Newquay: FA Cup Preview and Ticket Info

Steve Jupp, BA11's Club Historian, looks ahead to the Preliminary Round fixture at Badgers Hill.

With SIX Southern League points safely banked in the opening week of the new season, attention now turns to the magic of the FA Cup and that once-a-year dream of maybe, just maybe, sharing the same pitch with a League One luminary… a Luton, a Lincoln or perhaps even a rematch with Leyton Orient.

The Preliminary Round is a long old haul from that elevated stage, but you have to start somewhere as Western League newcomers Newquay make a first-ever visit to Badgers Hill, their reward for a fine replay victory at Shepton Mallet in the Extra Prelim.

The Scarlet Runners and the Peppermints have met before, however, and reasonably recently at that. In a pre-season friendly on the North Cornwall coast in July 2019, Frome responded to falling two behind early in the second half with strikes from Luke Johnson and Rex Mannings to force a 2-2 draw.

Newquay were South West Peninsula League champions last term, conceding a miserly 18 goals in 30 fixtures, earning them a place at Step Five for the first time in their history.

They began life at Western League Premier Division level with back-to-back defeats but, after Cup success in the two tussles with Shepton, picked up their first points last week in a 3-2 thriller against Bradford Town.

On loan striker Jensen Wakefield netted (again!) for the Bobcats in that contest and Dodge devotees will be hoping he will not be the only Frome player to find the Newquay net this August.

For those who like their numbers, this will be the Robins’ 106th campaign in the FA Cup. They first entered way back in 1906, falling at the first hurdle in a 5-0 thumping at Newport County.

Last season’s ‘run’ ended in one of the low points of a disappointing campaign with a chastening 1-0 exit at the hands of lower-league Larkhall and it goes without saying that Danny Greaves and his management team, after two fine victories, will instil the message that any drop-off in performance levels will invite a similar outcome.

Let’s not forget though, some of the recent Cup highlights; beating National League South Oxford City, the goal-fest at Falmouth and that epic 2-1 replay triumph over Plymouth Parkway when Kyle Phillip’s last-gasp penalty save lifted the roof off the place.

While not quite getting close to emulating Jock Fairweather’s boys of 1954 or Marmaduke Date’s Band of Brothers of 1911 vintage, Frome have made the Third Qualifying Round stage FOUR times in the last dozen years or so… could this be the squad of players which takes them that little bit further?

Thankfully, the FA Cup still holds its charm at this end of the football spectrum and the joy of victory, whether it’s celebrated in Somerset or Cornwall, will go on through to Monday lunchtime when the velvet bag reveals its secrets and the dream goes on. Pure magic.

Squad Update

There are no new injury concerns since Harris Feltham's late withdrawal from the Bashley trip on Tuesday night. He and winger Charlie Holliday will undergo fitness tests in the build-up to Saturday's tie, but are expected to be available for selection.

On the latest episode of the Dodge the Question podcast, Courtney Fong, the new Chair of the Club, said: "We're going to work on Badgers Hill together. So kindness and respect is probably the biggest and most important element in terms of culture, and then understanding the longevity of what Badgers Hill represents.

"Whether it's under public ownership or if we're able to bring it back under private ownership, it represents a community asset. It is the second largest venue here in Frome, and we need to make sure that it's filled - filled with activities for all to enjoy, not just for football fans."

We all love the FA Cup / Trophy and the excitement of the Monday draws. Unfortunately, all the early rounds are against reasonably 'local' sides should we progress. But there's always the dream that we'll eventually l eventually land another Oxford City or Worthing.

We couldn't be doing more in the league , however, there are now SIX sides who have maximum points from their two games.
